10 Liverpool Long-standing Records Broken In 2010-2011 Season

It has been a season of two halves, definitely for Liverpool fans. The first half was full of woeful, embarassing and most times, disjointed performances. The second half of the season was packed with joyful, eventful, spirited and without a doubt, title-contender performances.

Liverpool over the autumn and winter period of this season had a manager, Roy Hodgson who clearly was ill-fitted considering the traditions and pedigree of the historical club. Match performances suffered due to archaic and timid tactics more suited to middle of the table football teams. Come January 2011, King Kenny took over the reins and everything changed. Kenny's second coming brought back the old attacking verve and imaginative play, Luis Suarez being the catalyst of all that was exciting about the Reds in the second half of the season.

After the disastrous start to the 2010-2011 season, who would have thought that Liverpool will finish the season 5th or 6th in the Premier League table?! Just to put things into perspective, a 5-6th place finish is higher than the 7th place achieved in 2009-2010. One would have figured that it's been a successful end to a troubled season but 5-6th placing only looked good on paper.

Liverpool fans this season, witnessed 10(!) proud records re-written and these surely underlined the sad fact that it has been a poor season by Liverpool's proud playing standards. The sterling performances of Lucas, Carragher, Suarez, Kuyt, Spearing and Meireles only papered over the cracks which King Kenny should put right in the next three years.

These ten records were,
  1. 18 years since Spurs last won at Anfield (1993)
  2. 25 years since Spurs did the double over Liverpool (1986)
  3. 27 years since Wolves last won at Anfield (1984)
  4. 27 years since Stoke last won against Liverpool (1984)
  5. 30 years since West Brom last beat Liverpool (1981)
  6. 57 years since the worst start to any Liverpool season (1953-54)
  7. 64 years since Blackpool did the double over Liverpool (1947)
  8. 1st ever Carling Cup loss to a League 2 outfit (Northampton)
  9. 1st £50 million pound player transfer to a Premier League rival (Reds legend Fernando Torres)
  10. Conceded 21-year old record of 18 league titles (to Manchester United)
That last record have been hardest to take, as United fans quite clearly have enjoyed knocking Liverpool off their perch!

So, in an overall strange and poor season, Liverpool had the players to do better but Roy Hodgson's playing philosophy and the injury-enforced absence of Steven Gerrard limited the potential of the Reds. Dalglish brought a bit of swagger back but Liverpool fans must surely want to forget this season very quickly indeed.
