One of the major concerns about Chelsea these past seasons have been the ageing of their senior players. Drogba, Lampard and Terry are all above 30 years old. These stalwarts have been the backbone of the most successful Chelsea side in the club's history.
The rebuilding process have started with the buying spree in January. 26-year old Fernando Torres was the biggest signing in the winter transfer window. Who wouldn't be interested in a Champions League available world class striker? Hardly anyone had seen Brazilian David Luiz until he signed for Chelsea. Luiz is only 23 years old, young and a potential jewel in the crown for the Blue Champions.
In acquiring David Luiz, Chelsea have finally replaced the Ricardo Carvalho. All great teams play with a tandem of a ball playing defender (i.e. David Luiz, Ferdinand, Agger) and a no-nonsense stopper (i.e. Terry, Vidic, Carragher). Luiz' fine reading of the game, excellent distribution and timely tackles are reminiscent of Carvalho's game while at Chelsea.
Despite his stuttering and goal less start in Chelsea colours, Fernando Torres will not take too long to open his account for the Blues. Unlike against Liverpool, El Nino got into good scoring positions against Fulham and his understanding with the team has vastly improved. I personally think that Ancelotti should persist playing Drogba, Torres and Anelka as the fearsome threesome will eventually work out how to play to each other's strengths. Drogba's snarling presence, Anelka's passing ability and Torres' clinical strikes will win games for Chelsea.
While the Blues world-class strikeforce has yet to click and score the necessary goals, Daniel Sturridge is showing great form at Bolton. Further proof that he has the talent and goalscoring ability to be part of Chelsea's future. Owen Coyle is slowing building a great reputation in spotting exciting loan prospects who could add something extra to Bolton's Premiership fortunes. Last season, Jack Wilshere was a hit at The Reebok, this season, it's Sturridge whom the fans have taken to.
Still only 21, prior to his loan spell, Sturridge has been banging 'em in during Chelsea reserves matches. A loan season at Bolton will serve him well, filling him with the confidence for the future of Chelsea Football Club.
A new Chelsea is emerging - a younger and more athletic Chelsea. David Luiz, Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge represent the changing face of Chelsea football club.
