2009/2010 Barclays Premier League Week 28 Review: The Weekend's Three Best Footballing Moments

Only four Premier League matches were played but there were significant matches indeed. Significant because both Arsenal and Manchester United took full advantage of Chelsea's involvement in the FA Cup. The Red Devils now top the Premier League table with 63 points and Arsenal ensured that the race to the Premiership title becomes a three-horse race.

West Ham's disappointing loss to Bolton and Wigan's superb win over Liverpool meant that both the Trotters and the Latics have leapfrogged over the Hammers. Kevin Davies, Jack Wilshere and Hugo Rodallega have shown why their respective managers treasure and rate them so highly.

These are the weekend's three best football moments,

  1.  Paul Scholes 100th league goal for the Red Devils
  2. Jack Wilshere becomes the youngest Premier League goalscorer this season
  3. Theo Walcott's best game for the Gunners
I have enjoyed Bob Holmes' look at the Premier League World....

EMILE HESKEY UNLIKELY SCORERS CLUB
– Dave Nugent
Burnley’s on-loan journeyman striker bagged a rare goal against Arsenal and then told Arsene Wenger: “Football is not a girl’s game.”

ASHLEY COLE ‘SWERVE OFF THE ROAD’ MOMENT
– Remember how poor, downtrodden Cashley reacted when offered a measly “piss-taking” £55k a week by Arsenal?
Well, here's Ian Wright on Man City’s reluctance to improve the lot of son Shaun Wright-Phillips who is eking out an existence on a breadline £80k a week. “They are mugging him and treating him like a youth team player,” fumed dad.

ALBERTO AQUILANI RARE SIGHTING AWARD
– Owen Hargreaves
The forgotten midfielder has been sidelined since September 2008 with a recurring knee injury but United boss Fergie seems optimistic that the 29-year-old is closer to a full return than ever. “Owen has shown for the first time that he is almost ready to play. He has been training with the first team, which has been good to see and is penciled in for a game with the reserves on Thursday.

WIFE (DEFINITELY NOT WAG) OF THE WEEK

– Tzofit Grant
Avram’s wife was not at all fazed by her husband’s massage parlour visit, it seems. She told the Daily Telegraph: “He’s lonely. He should have had two massages.” The Israeli TV presenter added: “When I go to bed with a man I am making love first and foremost to his brain.” And while acknowledging that Jose Mourinho was “sexy”, Tzofit declared: “But Avram has more charisma.

SAUCE OF SUCCESS
- Gonzalo Higuain this week put his recent success down to ketchup after admitting one of the best pieces of advice he ever received was from former Real Madrid teammate Ruud van Nistelrooy. Van the Man told him scoring goals was like trying to get sauce out of the bottle – “you bang away for ages without success and then it all comes out at once.” The Argentine is Real’s top scorer with 16 goals in 18 games.

SEPPTIC CORNER
- Sepp Blatter said last week
Back in the 1980s, a love story began between me and Africa. Today, with 100 days to go until the World Cup, this love story is becoming a wedding party. Africa fills me with emotions. FIFA is giving something back to Africa: together we can do it!

Not everyone agrees. Here’s a recent statement from South African workers’ union Cosatu:
We demand that FIFA stop the unscrupulous conduct taking place around the World Cup by a cabal of FIFA beneficiaries. We will boycott any FIFA events until they behave ethically and stop exploiting South African workers...”

THINGS THEY WISH THEY’D NEVER SAID
- Neil Warnock
In 2007, he insisted: “Palace is my last job, without a shadow of a doubt. There won’t be another job for me.
2010 – Moves to QPR.

WAG OF THE WEEK
- Charlotte Mears
Small-time actress, big-time WAG, she’s among a long list of ex'es of Jermain Defoe. Charlotte is still kicking around the football scene. Last seen trying to boil an egg in her £200k kitchen, she admits to being something less than a celebrity chef. “Virtually all the cooking I’ve done is preparing the occasional Pot Noodle”, she once said. Despite having six ovens, two huge wine coolers and ‘the Rolls Royce of fridges’, she couldn’t stand the heat and Jermain left her to pursue other dishes.
